Making sense of Company Goals

The process of applying for B Corp certification has served as an education in good business governance—a discipline not traditionally taught at design school. In the pursuit of impactful work, it became clear that equal attention must be given to how that work is executed. A significant change was the deliberate focus on aligning business objectives with team motivations, creating a logic that renders every endeavour more purposeful and capable of exceeding the sum of its parts.

The challenge then became: how can understanding and alignment with these objectives be made accessible and relevant to everyone, regardless of role? In response, 2023 and 2024 saw the development of a master document that unifies the mission, vision, company goals, values, and behaviour into one digital tool. This consolidated resource replaces disparate PDFs and company handbooks, offering a single, contained space for all strategic information.

The challenge then became: how can understanding and alignment with these objectives be made accessible and relevant to everyone, regardless of role?

Structured as a Strategy House—with the Mission and Vision supported by five key tenets adapted from the B Corp impact areas (human, creative, collaborative, drive change, and commercial)—the framework aligns every job description with key business objectives. It links individual KPIs with broad, long-term company goals, clarifying expectations at each stage of role progression. This approach enhances understanding of decision-making contexts and, through a structured appraisal process, ensures that personal and company goals are in harmony.

Furthermore, this framework provides foundational logic for every stakeholder group, including the Governance team, to report on progress. It brings the entire studio closer to its ambitions and outlines a clear roadmap for the coming three years. Running a business is recognised as a continuous learning curve, influenced by myriad external and internal factors. While this document is set to evolve, it marks a significant step forward in organising complex information into one consistent space.
